New from Effetto Mariposa: CarboCut

Category: Effetto Mariposa
   Posted on Aug 8, 2008

Cantitoe Road is pleased to introduce Effetto Mariposa's latest product for bicycle mechanics: the first composite-specific hacksaw, CarboCut.

CarboCut is a revolutionary tool designed for bicycle mechanics that need quality tools to cut through hard materials such as composites, ceramics, steel and titanium. Composed of tungsten carbide, CarboCut glides easily through carbon and Kevlar fibers without damaging them.

Some of CarboCut's highlights:

  • Composite-friendly: cuts faster with a better finish and zero fiber damage. The gritted blade has thousands of cutting edges and cuts with a ‘grinding' action rather than the aggressive ‘ripping' action like that of a toothed blade and reduces sand-paper time with its smooth tube cut.
  • Smooth-cutting action & better control: the CarboCut blade cuts on both the push and the pull stroke, providing more control and less vibration. Being ¾" tall, the blade itself is an additional guide for straight cuts while the cutting surface passes clearly through most cut jigs (however, the tungsten carbide blade has no problems making room for itself on tighter jigs though).
  • Durable blade: Tungsten carbide blades greatly outlive standard metal toothed blades, especially when cutting difficult materials like composites.
  • What it cuts: composites, hard metals (hardened steel, cast iron, titanium) ceramic and masonry.
  • Compact/easy to handle: CarboCut accepts 10" blades, making it very compact and easy to carry in a toolbox or to use in tight spaces. Replacement blades are available from CantitoeRoad and sold in packs of five.
  • Made with premium materials: the CarboCut handle is made with certified aluminum (EN AB46100 alloy, no scrap-aluminum added here), its frame with certified steel (Fe42) and its blade is simply extraordinary: this tool is built to last and perform. An ergonomic blade-tightening knob ensures the correct blade tension for many, perfect cuts.

But wait... what exactly is Tungsten Carbide?

Tungsten Carbide is a chemical compound containing tungsten and carbon. Like most ceramic materials (especially carbides) it has very high hardness, high thermal/chemical resistance but, compared to metals, it's very brittle. In fact, when measuring hardness on the Mohs scale, tungsten carbide rates 9 just below diamonds (which rate 10 on the same scale), making it a suitable material for cutting tools. To reduce brittleness, tungsten carbide is cemented by taking tungsten carbide powder and sintering it with cobalt powder (a ductile metal). The result is a metal-matrix composite where cobalt (that enters the liquid stage during the process, unlike tungsten carbide) embeds and cements the tungsten carbide grains creating a composite that has a higher shock resistance and toughness than tungsten carbide alone but preserves its high hardness.
